The world's first solar-powered family car that can travel 420 miles on a sunny day and creates TWICE as much energy as it uses

  • The car - called Stella - is also world's first 'energy positive' car
  • It can seat four and travel twice as far as an electric car before recharging
  • It weighs a mere 380kg, 1120kg lighter than the average electrical car

A breakthrough in sustainable energy and car design has enabled a team of engineers to build the world's first solar powered family car.
The Dutch team have created the world's first 'energy positive' car, which means it produces more energy than it uses.
It also has enough room to seat a family of four.

Using large solar panels that are placed on the roof of the car, 'Stella' can travel 250 miles without sunshine and on a sunny day, when fully charged, it can drive up to 420 miles.
This is nearly twice as far as a standard electric car can travel before it needs to be charged up.

Made with the latest in lightweight materials, such as high grade aluminium and carbon fibre, the car weighs a mere 380kg, 1120kg lighter than the average electrical car.
Team Manager, Lex Hoefsloot, at Eindhoven University of Technology, said: ‘Because the car is standing still 90 per cent of the time in front of your house or your office, we found out that in 10 out of the 12 months of the year, the car provided more energy than it uses.

‘The car also produces twice the amount of energy needed to drive normal distances and soon our car will be granted a licence plate by the Dutch authorities.
‘We strongly believe that the car of the future is much lighter, aerodynamic and more efficient.

‘The car is still expensive because it is a prototype and it is hand-made, but when the production is scaled up, the car could be just as affordable as a normal family car.
‘The solar cells on the roof of the car cost only £2,600.
‘Our future designs will focus on making the car even more comfortable, practical and energy efficient, so in the end people have the feeling that they could buy a similar car at a dealership.’

The Peugeot 208 GTI is a dream re-hatched

Peugeot 208 GTI

Price: £18, 895

Peugeot 208 GTi is nippy around town with a handy burst of acceleration up to 30mph
Do you remember the conspicuous-consuming yuppies, Big Bang in the City and comic Harry Enfield's wide-boy Loadsamoney character waving wads of wonga around?
While the Eighties City traders roared around in Porsches with mobile phones the size of a brick clamped to their ears, mere mortals with less money favored the cheaper, but no less fashionable, Peugeot 205 GTi, which also became an icon of that era.
Now, almost three decades on, comes what Peugeot believes is its true spiritual successor - the 208 GTi.

GOOD

What a little belter! It's nippy around town with a handy burst of acceleration up to 30mph to keep you out of trouble.
Peugeot 208 GTi is nippy around town with a handy burst of acceleration up to 30mph
Nimble, light and fast on its feet with a spirited joie de vivre and plenty of verve. Lowered suspension gives it a lean and mean stance. The driving position is also 8mm lower than the standard 208.
This poised, three-door, super-mini hatchback is a beautiful shape with 17in alloys. Even the GTi badge - in red on a shiny metal backdrop - looks smart.
Devilishly red - and slightly chilling - the dashboard light surround is reminiscent of the infamous demon eyes poster advert campaign once used against Tony Blair.

A racy interior with drilled pedals, quality trim, aluminium effect on the sills and pedals. Comfortable bucket sports seats finished in full-grain black halfleather and cloth, embossed with the GTi logo.
Tactile, sculpted gearstick and flat-bottomed, small, chunky sports steering wheel. Lots of detail with distinctive daytime running lights, C-shape LED indicators, and a double chrome exhaust pipe.
Smooth, agile performance from the 1.6 litre 200bhp petrol engine linked to a fluid six-speed manual gearbox. Sprints from rest to 62mph in 6.8 seconds with a top speed of 143mph.
Pretty frugal, averaging 47.9mpg, rising to 60.1 mpg cruising and still managing 34.4 mpg round town.
Relatively low CO2 emissions of 139g/km giving a fairly affordable road tax ban E rate of £125 a year.
Fair-sized boot and flexible seating.
Among standard features are electric folding door mirrors, digital DAB radio, Bluetooth and automatic headlamps and wipers.

BAD

Those nice little extras will quickly ramp up the price by nearly £1,000, including £495 for metallic paint; a multi-function colour touchscreen upgrade (£400); and personalised onyx black alloy wheels (£100).
Just shy of £20k for a hothatch might be a stretch for some. The original 1.9 205 GTi, which did 0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds with a topspeed of 123mph, cost just £6,295.
This car's set-up suggests the fuel efficiency figures will be missed by a wide margin in the real world.
The big touchscreen, designed for the iPad and computer-literate generation, can be fiddly if you're not. Just as well as 45 per cent of buyers are predicted to be aged 35 to 45, 70 per cent male and with eight out of ten spending their own cash.

How the new compact Mazda 3 saloon will rival the Volkswagen Golf

Rocket boosters are just what David Cameron would like behind him as he accelerates towards the 2015 General Election.
So the chance to have the supersonic Bloodhound supercar with him in Downing Street, pictured left, was too tempting an offer to refuse. The £13m jet and rocketpropelled car not only aims to beat the current land speed record of 763mph next year, but also to be the first land vehicle to exceed 1,000mph by election year 2015.
The Prime Minister used the occasion - along with world speed record-holder Wing Commander Andy Green, who will pilot the Bloodhound in the attempts in South Africa, to launch a new multi-million apprenticeship scheme which aims to produce an extra 100,000 engineering technicians by 2018, alongside existing apprentices and pupils from Barclay School in Stevenage, Herts.
The Bloodhound SSC project - sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - aims to inspire the next generation of British engineers and scientists.
Mr Cameron said: 'British engineering and innovation are a part of our history and we are rightly proud that our engineering excellence continues to change the world we live in for the better. Bloodhound is a fantastic example of what our engineers can achieve.'

Elmbridge, in leafy Surrey, has been crowned the convertible capital of Britain.
The borough, which includes Esher, Claygate, Weybridge, Oxshott and Walton-on-Thames, and has been dubbed 'the Beverly Hills of Britain' has more soft-tops per head of population than anywhere in the country. More than 5,300 convertibles are registered there, or one for around every 25 residents.
High-profile residents include exfootballer Jamie Redknapp and his pop-star wife Louise, and, aptly enough, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host Chris Tarrant.
Elmbridge was followed closely by the City of London, South Bucks in Buckinghamshire and Windsor and Maidenhead, Berkshire.
By contrast, rain-soaked Eilean Siar in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, has the fewest convertibles per person - with one for every 468 residents. It was followed by the Shetlands with one per 393 inhabitants, the Orkneys at 365, the London boroughs of Newham (288) and Hackney (214), the Isles of Scilly (200), and Manchester (190).
The research was undertaken by French car-maker Citroen to coincide with the launch of its new DS3 Cabrio, the soft-top version of the popular DS3 hatchback.
Britain's 900,000 convertibles make up around three per cent of all registered cars.

Ford's revolutionary new 'wi-fi' brake lights warn other drivers to slow down to avoid a rear-end shunt - even when they can't see why.
The system knows when cars out of sight around a blind corner - or even hidden in traffic in front of a large bus or van - are hitting the brakes and warns drivers behind to do likewise to avoid a crash.
Ford has been using specially equipped S-MAX models to test the technology. When the car in front brakes, it sends a wi-fi signal from its illuminated brake light to any other cars behind which have the same system, giving those drivers a dashboard warning.
The system works in a fraction of a second, even when the first braking car is out of sight.

More than nine in ten drivers don't trust ministers to keep their word over plans to cut motoring taxes in return for introducing controversial new road tolls to fix Britain's crumbling roads, a report reveals.
Two thirds of convertible owners in Britain either never or rarely put their roofs down
Only one in 16 motorists (6 per cent) believes the Government would play fair over bringing in pay-as-you-drive schemes, says the RAC Foundation's research.
The findings indicate that the main stumbling block to roadtolling or road pricing is not motorists' objections to the principle, but rather scepticism and complete distrust in governments of all complexions to keep their word if such schemes are brought in.
Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: 'There are a thousand ways to word a question but the results of this survey seem crystal clear.
'However you ask them, the British public do not trust ministers when it comes to motoring taxation.'

Do rural police forces really need a 155mph BMW Interceptor?

New kit: Gloucestershire Police's new £30,000 BMW Interceptor which can cover the county's 50 miles of motorway in under 20 minues
It looks more suited to a role in a Mad Max movie than to patrolling the nation’s motorways.
This is the BMW Interceptor, a police pursuit vehicle that can reach speeds of 155mph – meaning it could theoretically cover Gloucestershire’s 50 miles of motorway in under 20 minutes.
But so far, the £30,000 hatchback has been used mostly to track down uninsured or stolen cars on the speed-restricted roads in the genteel towns and villages of the Cotswolds and surrounding areas.

The car is based on the BMW 1 Series available in showrooms but has been tweaked, enhanced and kitted out with cameras to make it fit for high-speed police work.
For those in any doubt, the word ‘Interceptor’ is emblazoned across the front, back and sides.

The vehicle currently cruising Gloucestershire is a prototype that is being shared among the country’s police forces before orders are invited.
AA spokesman Paul Watters called it ‘jaw-dropping’ and warned that young drivers could see it as a challenge.

Keeping the law: Mel Gibson pictured driving his Interceptor in the Mad max films

‘I’m not sure what motorists would think if they saw that looming into view,’ he said.
‘Probably “slow down”. You almost expect a net to come out of the boot and tyre shredders out of the wheels. It’s menacing. I’ve never seen a real police car with “Interceptor” on it.
Comparisons: A poster for the 1979 Mad Max film featuring the Interceptor car
'I hope it wouldn’t prove a red rag to a bull and a challenge for some of the real tearaways who might try to take it on.’
The 1979 Mad Max movie starred Mel Gibson as a police officer in a post-apocalyptic future, and featured a blisteringly fast police car with ‘Interceptor’ written prominently across it.
Posters featured Gibson and one of the Interceptor cars with the headline: ‘The last law in a world gone out of control. Pray that he’s out there somewhere.’
But police insist the Interceptor is a serious crime-busting tool – not a macho gimmick.
A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: ‘We’re delighted with it. There is a lot of interest in it. This Interceptor is equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
'Officers can drive the car on any road in the county and scan license plates with the special ANPR camera.
‘If the number plate reveals the car has a police marker on it, has been used in crimes previously or is uninsured, the officers can stop the vehicle and carry out a search.’
A BMW spokesman said: ‘It is equipped with a front-facing, rear-facing and an interior camera pointing at anyone sat in the rear of the vehicle.
'It continues recording after the vehicle ignition is turned off to capture essential post-incident footage.’
The high-visibility Interceptor on trial is based on the BMW 125d M Sport diesel sports hatch-back.
However, police forces are also testing out an unmarked or ‘stealth’ version of the Interceptor based on the even more powerful M 135i petrol version which will be used for a combination of undercover operations and some low-profile traffic duties.
The Interceptor has been created by the German car-maker’s specialist ‘BMW Authorities Department’ and has been designed to meet demand for fast but smaller police pursuit vehicles   which are not left trailing when suspects in tiny vehicles try to give them the slip by going down tight alleyways or between bollards.
Special equipment fitted  includes hi-tech ‘evidential camera’ systems to catch speeding motorists, bad drivers, and criminal activity – as well as read the number-plate using Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
It is also fitted with specialist sporty  ‘BMW Performance’ options including black kidney grilles and black wheels and streamlined styling.
For police work BMW said the Interceptor is fitted with an emergency warning system designed for a ‘high local impact’  with additional blue lights and a siren system  featuring ‘enhanced penetration capabilities.’ The bright high-impact livery is  designed to ‘disrupt criminal behaviour.
The Interceptor has now moved on to Nottingham-shire Police which has taken deliver  ahead of its own trials.
Nottingham-shire Police said they will be displaying the car to the public at  Emergency Services Day at New-stead Abbey on Sunday between 10am and 4pm.

Interesting Facts About Used Cars

Used cars auctions are among the best place to get a car cheaply. You can bid for a used car for as low as a hundred dollars at a used car auction. Not all auctions sell good cars, so you have got to be on the alert.

There are several places that you can buy used cars from. One of such places include an auction. Used car auctions are held almost on a monthly basis in different states. You can get a used car for next to nothing at an auction that is organized by the government.

You don't need to have a mechanic tag along with you to the venue of a used car sale because you can inspect a car for yourself. you should be able to determine the state or quality of a used car by looking at factors such as the paint job, the body work and the tyres. More often than not, the odometer of a used car can determine its quality.

Getting an inexpensive used car from Japan is quite easy as long as you have a dealer you can trust. Make sure that any dealer of used cars in Japan is a member of JUMVEA, a government approved trade body for foreign car expertise. A Japanese used car dealer who belongs to a recognized association often has to operate according to a set code of ethics and is therefore more trustworthy.

Owners of certified used cars are often given benefit that only new car owners enjoy such as roadside assistance. If you purchase a certified used car, you get warranty on the car that is cost effective and enables you to save some dollars. Part of the privileges you get when you purchase a certified used car is free oil changes for your car.

Many people prefer to go for auctions because they can get cars cheaper there. Used cars are cheaper at auctions because they are often repossessed from people. Indeed, if you are looking to own a used car without paying too much money, go to a used car auction.

Used cars can be wrecks in disguise so you need to be careful about which car you select at the end of your search. Unless you are truly satisfied with the look of a car, don't even think about paying for it.

Are You Considering Online Motorcycle Shopping?

At this point in time, you might have made all conclusions on the choice of motorbike you want, and you must have also weighed all the advantages of one bike over another. But is this enough? What about your choice against your money? It is true that there is a considerable difference when buying a motorbike online and when you meet the dealer physically. However, when making online shopping, you must take note of the following points that will shape your budget.

The supremacy of the engine will tell of the price. Every bike may seem the same but they will never cost the same due to the force of their engines. The force of the engine is what determines efficacy, value and rapidity of one bike over the other. Thus, a bike with a higher force will be valued more than that with a lower force. Also bear in mind that a superior engine will consume more fuel and per se, will be costly to maintain.

Also take note of the registered trademark. It has been widely revealed that some people tend to consume a particular brand due to its popularity and lifelong standing in the market. There have been some brand names that have existed time immemorial. You will of course want to compare the prices of things that have captured that market with new products.

It may be worthwhile to go in for a new product. If you seek to get a bike simply for the purpose of conveyance, any bike will do. New bikes, especially those from emerging economies in Asia will be cheaper. These new makes are at their dawn and will want to do all to institute themselves into the market. They will always sell as if they are always on a promotion.

Another factor that will affect your budget is the medium of purchase. As earlier said, an online purchase at time is more expensive than an express purchase. Think of the cost of advert over the web, think of all the labor and level of expertise incurred in setting up that webpage? All these will be spread over the purchase price. Think of all the cost and risk associated with delivery. Imagine that you have been delivered a bike that does not meet your desire due to the fact that you did not give yourself the option of thoroughly inspecting it. You may want to sue the seller; at what and whose costs? If you turn out to be unsuccessful, how about your time and efforts spent? All these would have been employed towards another profitable activity.

The crucial point is that you have made it a necessity to buy a bike, but it must never be at all cost. You have a dual purpose. The first is to buy a bike that meets your need and the second is to save your finances. Therefore you must always be a prudent buyer.

A Look At Some Of The Different Motorcycle Engines

Motorcycles have been around for more than ten decades. During this time, motorcycle engines have developed through tweaking and reworking items to get the best performance. There have been more than one dozen engines, but some never met with success. Cost efficiency and customer satisfaction brought failure to a number of motorcycle engines.

All motorcycle engines are fueled by gasoline. To best understand engine types, it is important to understand how an engine works.

A pole called a rod cranks inside the engine and creates a draft that pulls both gasoline and air into a chamber called the cylinder. Inside the cylinder, a piston and rod quickly move up to push the gasoline and air into a smaller space where it meets the spark plug. The spark plug produces a spark between its two metal pieces.

Once the spark plug gives off a spark, the gasoline and air explode. This pushes the piston down, which in turn drives the belt or chain. This action is called torque. The movement of the belt or chain causes the rear wheel of the motorcycle to revolve. A motorcycle's performance is determined by how many cylinders are inside the engine and how they are arranged.

Single cylinder engine:

A single cylinder engine has one cylinder and one piston. Single cylinder engines are used in all off road motorcycles. The single cylinder provides a lot of torque, but also a load of vibration. The vibration is loud and one of the qualities that dirt bike race fans crave during a race.

Twin cylinder engine:

Logically, twin cylinder engines have two cylinders. The cylinders are placed together at an angle. Usually the cylinders are positioned at a 90 degree angle, but there are exclusions to that standard. A twin cylinder engine produces more power because there is more torque and more fuel used. Twin cylinder engines do not vibrate as much as a single cylinder engine.

Now, as stated above, there are exceptions. The boxed or boxer design finds cylinders placed side by side. This produces even less vibration, but adds a new issue. The cylinders tend to jut out the side of the bike, which makes it hard to take sharp corners. Another issue is the tremendous heat that the cylinders project; it makes leg protection a necessary evil.

Triple Cylinder Engines

A three cylinder engine finds the cylinders included in a head. This type of engine offers a load of power, but it also requires more parts. Each cylinder requires an additional fuel injector and carburetor. The more cylinders included on an engine, the higher the engine RPM. More RPM means more power. Triumph makes motorcycles using three cylinders and boy can they fly!

Four Cylinder Engines

The four cylinder engine is just like the three cylinder engine only it has the additional cylinder and therefore weighs more. As is true of any engine, more cylinders equal more power and smoother sailing.

It is important to consider how much size and power you require in your motorcycle. If you are taking your bike off road, you need a bike with plenty of torque and a low rpm to make it up hills and quickly navigate corners. For off roading, stick with a single cylinder. A double cylinder is your second choice.

If your main purpose for riding a motorcycle is riding through traffic and along roads, do not purchase a bike with less than a twin cylinder engine, although a three or four cylinder engine is a better idea.

5 Ways to Convince Your Spouse that You Need a Custom Built Motorcycle

There's no better feeling than cruising the open road on your own, completely personalized motorcycle that you built from the ground up from one of the many custom bike kits available today. But there are also a lot of "practical" reasons for building a killer custom motorcycle using custom bike kits as opposed to buying a stock motorcycle or a car. If you're catching slack for wanting to custom build your own bike, try one or all of these logical, spouse-friendly arguments to show how your desire for a custom motorcycle is actually a benefit for the entire family.

You'll save money on gas:
The average motorcycle gets 50 miles per gallon as opposed to a car that gets an average of 21 miles per gallon. That means once you can start using your motorcycle to commute back and forth to work, you'll be spending half as much at the pump. When presenting your case, figure out the actual yearly savings and equate the dollar amount with an item you're spouse has been wanting like a designer bag or a vacation get away. Now that you've presented an impenetrable reason to own a motorcycle in general, it's onto making a case for custom bikes as opposed to stock motorcycles.

You'll be home more often:
That is, at least until you've finished building your bike. After that it's off to hit the highway on long cruises of pure, adrenaline induced freedom. Until then however, starting from one of the many custom bike kits means that you'll be tinkering in the garage for at least a few months while your custom vision comes together.

Custom bike kits cost less:
These kits can cost less than half that of a stock bike. If your spouse liked the idea of saving more than half on gasoline, saving more than half on the cost of the motorcycle itself is sure to go over even better. Additionally, with custom bike kits you can "pay as you go" for many of the non-essential accessories. With custom bike kits you're not out of pocket all of the money at once so you can use cash instead of credit to finance all or part of the bike.

Higher resale value:
Instead of depreciating in value like a car or stock motorcycle, custom bike kits allow you to build a completely unique vehicle that will hold or appreciate in value. The cooler and more elaborate the accessories that you add to custom bike kit, the greater the resale value of the finished motorcycle. It's a win, win situation-while custom bike kits are less expensive than stock motorcycles, they can actually end up being worth more. Though your motorcycle will probably be the last thing you'd ever part with, you can assure your spouse that a custom motorcycle is a smart investment. Should financial difficulty arise, the sale of your custom chopper will be a fast an easy way to save the day.

You'll save on repair costs:
With custom kits, you're building your motorcycle from the ground up. You'll know enough to take care of what would be costly repairs. Forget mechanics that charge $50 per hour for labor. Once you know the intricacies of your motorcycle inside and out, there won't be any repair that you can't handle yourself.

Add up the cost savings and there's really no reason why building your own custom motorcycle from on of the many custom bike kits available isn't a smart idea. Even better, get your spouse excited about the idea of designing and riding on your custom motorcycle. Most likely, your spouse wants the two of you to be happy and enjoy your life-the financial benefits are just icing on the cake.
