Apple releases iOS 15.4.1 and iPadOS 15.4.1 to fix battery drain issues

Today Apple is releasing a new round of software updates for its mobile devices. This includes iOS 15.4.1 for all supported iPhones, as well as iPadOS 15.4.1 for all supported tablets. As the number incrementation strongly implies, this is a minor release that doesn't bring any new features. It does, however, purport to improve something that we'd wager is incredibly important for most people: battery life. That's because the release notes mention that upon installation of this update, your iPhone or iPad will fix the battery drain issues that were apparently introduced with the release of...

Google Pixel 6a retail box allegedly leaks showing new Pixel 6-like design

Google is widely expected to announce the Pixel 6a during its I/O conference taking place this May. The 6a will of course be the company's next installment in its affordable smartphone line, following on from the 5a launched last year. Today an unverified source brings us the image you can see below, which obviously claims to portray the retail box for the upcoming Google Pixel 6a. And if this is real, which is a big if, then it seems like Google is looking to unify its design language across its smartphone range, as the Pixel 6a sports a distinctly Pixel 6-like look, and doesn't resemble...

Kuo: iPhones 14 to miss on under-display fingerprint sensor, periscope camera

Ming-Chi Kuo revealed in his latest investor note that the Apple iPhones launched this year will miss out on periscope cameras and the under-display Touch ID. The analyst predicted that the long zoom lens might arrive next year 2023, while the fingerprint scanner is not making it until 2025. We are already stepping into April, meaning the new iPhone launch is about five and a half months away. Since we are not getting a UD sensor or a periscope camera, what are we getting? Well, the iPhone 14 is coming with two punch holes, an improved main camera sensor, a thicker body and the...

Xiaomi partnership with Leica seemingly confirmed by MIUI app

Some partnerships between phone makers and camera companies seem to be little more than marketing ploys. Others, however, have changed mobile photography for the better - and perhaps none more than the cooperation between Huawei and Leica. However, with Huawei's well documented problems over the past few years, stemming from various US government bans, it's been selling way less phones than it used to, and Leica might be looking to partner with another smartphone maker. It's been rumored already for a few months: the Xiaomi 12 Ultra's camera module will be Leica branded. But... could this...

Rugged Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro 2 leaks in renders

Samsung's Xcover line of rugged smartphones is apparently due for a refresh this year, with the Galaxy Xcover Pro 2 already spotted in a benchmark database listing earlier this month. And today the same device has been portrayed in detailed CAD-based renders. The source of the renders also claims the phone will have a 6.56" screen (approximate size), an Infinity-V design at the front (that's what Samsung calls a waterdrop notch), a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Galaxy Xcover Pro 2's dimensions are alleged to be 169.5 x 81.1 x 10.1 mm. This...

Samsung explains the design ideas that shaped One UI 4

Samsung offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes into how One UI 4.0 was designed. Key goals were for the interface to be intuitive and safe while making it easy for users to express themselves. Version 4 starts out with a color system that was focused on cleaning up the look. Color is applied to the most important elements, everything else is left in monochrome. The system has three groups of colors: core, functional and app colors. Before One UI 4.0, the interfaced used slightly different colors to mean the same thing. Version 4 unified them in a consistent manner to create the...

Google still working on Face Unlock for Pixel 6 series

The Google Pixel 6 duo still don’t have Face Unlock over half a year since their initial launch. As far as rumors go, Google wanted to implement facial recognition to its phones but missed the deadline and ultimately shipped its flagship phones without the feature. There might still be some hope though as XDA Recognized Developer Freak07 found new evidence of Face Unlock on Pixel 6 series while digging through the Android 12 Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) 3 Beta. The evidence suggests that Google might still push Face Unlock for Pixel 6 phones as a future software update but there's...

Apple reportedly cuts iPhone SE production by 20%

Apple unveiled the latest iPhone SE earlier this month, and it went on sale already. However, it looks like the company isn't expecting it to perform as good as it had hoped. According to a new rumor out of Asia, Apple is telling multiple suppliers that it aims to cut production orders by 2 to 3 million units for the second quarter of this year (the one starting in April and ending in June). That apparently means it wants to make about 20% fewer iPhone SE (2022) units than it initially planned. "Sources briefed on the matter" told Nikkei Asia that the blame for this move goes to the...

It will debut on April 11 with a big screen on the inside, just like the Oppo Find N and Galaxy Z Fold3. The new vivo phone will also have a secondary screen on the outside. The inner fold is not really a surprise given how all the competitors are going for the same factor, although we weren’t counting off an attempt from vivo to bring something different to the market, like an outwards hinge like the first Huawei Mate X. The event in two weeks is also supposed to be the launch...

Samsung Galaxy A13 in for review

This is the Samsung Galaxy A13 - Samsung's latest entry-level A series phone. The Galaxy A13 is a simple phone that provides a good set of specs, an emphasis on display and battery life, at the affordable starting price of €190 for the 4/64GB model, which we have today. The phone comes with a SIM tool and a cable, just like the expensive Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy A13 is a handsome phone. It has a minimalistic feel to it with its simple design - the body of the phone is made of plastic and lacks any sort of cutouts or shapes. It kind of reminds us of the unapologetically...

Weekly poll: Realme GT Neo3 - hot or not?

The Realme GT Neo3 is launching next week (in China) and it will become only the second Dimensity 8100 phone to hit the market. It is also the first to use Realme’s new UltraDart charging architecture, running at 150W (the middle of its planned range of 100-200W). Well, some units will use the 150W system, others will charge at 80W – not slow by any means (0-100% in 32 minutes), but not headline-grabbing either. The 80W model comes with a slightly larger battery, 5,000 mAh vs. 4,500 mAh for the 150W model. There is no official 0-100% time for the 150W model, but a 0-50% charge should be...

How much fast charging costs in terms of battery capacity?

Have you noticed how phones with fast charging tend to have smaller batteries than phones that charge slowly? We did. We even asked manufacturers about it, however, they were pretty tight lipped about the details. So, we decided to do our own research. We searched through our database for devices from the same maker, that launched around the same time and that have the same dimensions (down to the tenth of a millimeter), but offer different charge speeds. The idea is to remove as many variables as possible. Often times addition of fast charging is the difference between vanilla and Pro...

Weekly poll results: the Galaxy A73 5G gets a warm welcome, but availability may be an issue

Samsung may want to reconsider the launch plans for the Galaxy A73 5G. The results from last week’s poll show that this may be the best phones in the 2022 Galaxy A series. And yet we still don’t know where it will be available or how much it will cost. All we know is that it will launch in select regions in late April. We thought that losing the telephoto camera and not having a larger battery than the A53 would hurt it, but that wasn’t the case. The A73 topped the poll and got a better reception than the A53 and A33. The biggest threat to the A73 may be an S-series flagship instead of...

We reviewed the iQOO 9 Pro unveiled in January and concluded it's a smartphone that's worth considering if you are in the market for an Android flagship. Today, we have the vanilla iQOO 9 at our office for a full review. Our unit has 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage onboard, but there's another model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. Both run Android 12-based FuntouchOS 12 out of the box, unlike the Chinese iQOO 9 which boots OriginOS...
