Huawei Pocket S launching on November 2

Huawei is launching its second clamshell foldable on November 2. The company confirmed the launch event for the Huawei Pocket S will start at 7PM Beijing time (11AM UTC) and we got a short teaser video that doesn’t really give us much to work with. The P50 Pocket successor was certified on TENAA back in August where we got a glimpse of its design. Based on the new teaser video and a post from Huawei CEO Richard Yu, the Pocket S will be offered in plenty of vibrant colors including blue, pink, green and yellow. The device is expected to be equipped with the Snapdragon 888 4G...

Samsung Galaxy A04s in for review

Samsung keeps expanding its entry-level lineup lately - you get the new Galaxy A04e, the Galaxy A13, and the latest arrival in our review queue, the Galaxy A04s. It comes in a simple box with a USB cable. You'll need to supply your own case and charger. The Galaxy A04s starts at €190 in Europe in 3/32GB trim, or around INR 13,500 in 4/64GB. It's only ever bested, price-wise, by the Galaxy A13, which has a sharper display and an ultrawide camera over the A04s. The Galaxy A04s counters with a 90Hz display. Like the Galaxy A13, the Galaxy A04s packs an 8nm Exynos 850 chip, and a...

Top 10 trending phones of week 42

The Google Pixel 7 Pro extended its reign in our trending chart to three consecutive weeks, but the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max has closed the gap and we might see a change next time around. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has gained another spot, pushing the Xiaomi 12T Pro out of the podium places. The Samsung Galaxy A53 is another phone on the rise, taking fifth as the aging iPhone XR and iPhone X follow it. The Google Pixel 7 finds itself all the way down in eight spot, while the Redmi Note 11 retains the ninth position. The Samsung Galaxy S22 was 10th last week, but this time it's...

Sony WH-1000XM5 review

Sony's ridiculously named WH-1000X series has been a massive success. The original model launched back in 2016 and had the uphill battle of going against the industry standard that was Bose. While the first model showed promise, it was the relentless iterations over the years that solidified Sony's position in the segment and helped it take the crown for the most effective noise cancellation on the market. It's been several years since and the market has matured quite a bit. The latest generation WH-1000XM5 enters a more crowded arena, with the likes of Bose, Apple, Sennheiser, Beats,...

Week 42 in review: New iPads, even more Galaxy S23 series rumors

This week's headlines were dominated by Apple's iPad lineup. The iPad Pro 11" and 12.9" got updated to the latest Apple M2 processor. The pair of slates also support Apple Pencil hover, meaning they'll detect the stylus from 12mm above the display. Meanwhile, Blackmagic Design confirmed that its hugely popular video editing software DaVinci Resolve is making the trek to the iPad in both its free and paid Studio version. The other iPad announcement was of the 10th generation iPad. More of a redesigned iPad Air than a vanilla iPad replacement, the new 10th gen iPad has a bigger 10.9-inch...

Weekly poll: will you buy an iPad Pro (2022)? How about a vanilla iPad (2022)?

The vanilla iPad, the last Apple tablet that still used Lightning, made the switch to USB-C this week. The slate took other steps towards usability as well, like putting the front-facing camera on the long side – no one is going to be doing video conferencing in portrait mode. Apple also unveiled new iPad Pros with the M2 chipset, bringing them up to par with the 2022 MacBook Air – one of the most powerful passively cooled machines that money can buy. Also from this week, Blackmagic Design announced that the DaVinci Resolve video editor is coming to iPad in Q4. Paired with the mighty M2...

Oppo AirVOOC 50W Wireless Flash Charger test

Wireless charging speeds aren’t what they used to be. Back in 2009, the Palm Pre gave us our first expirience with wireless charging via a proprietary Touch Stone charger and a special back cover. Soon after the Qi wireless industry standard emerged, though charging speeds topped out at just 5W and later expanded to 10W and eventually 15W. There are faster alternatives like Oppo’s AirVOOC 50W Wireless Flash Charger which we have here today for a test. As the name implies this wireless charger supports up to 50W speeds for select Oppo and OnePlus devices. We’ve already tested vivo’s 50W...

Weekly poll results: Xiaomi 12T series divides opinions

The Xiaomi 12T Pro has an ace up its sleeve – a 200MP camera. Unfortunately, the only other cards it has tucked up there are an 8 and a 2. That’s not a strong hand and potential buyers are divided on whether this phone is a good pick. Interestingly, some commenters under last week’s poll look at the 12T Pro as an affordable Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 phone that is a solid choice for gaming. The fastest Android chipset of 2022 is paired with the “biggest-ever” vapor chamber on a Xiaomi T-series, also there is a large 5,000mAh battery for long gaming sessions that only needs you to pause for around...

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+ allegedly spotted sporting a curved AMOLED display

Xiaomi recently hinted that the unveiling of the Redmi Note 12 series of phones should take place this month. We are still quite light on details, but the consensus among industry sources seems to be that initially, the launch will include three devices - the Redmi Note 12, Note 12 Pro and Note 12 Pro+. Going by past experience with Redmi Note lines, we only expect that list to get longer and longer with time. But for now, prior to the announcement event, we get to focus on some leaked clues like this product banner which seems to show a Redmi Note 12 phone, likely the Redmi Note 12 Pro+...

Three Asus ROG Phone 6 models put to test - which one is the fastest?

Introduction We've recently reviewed both the ROG Phone 6 Pro and the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate. As you might already know, the former of the two is based around Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, while the latter uses a tuned version of MediaTek's Dimensity 9000+ chipset. The ROG Phone 6D Ultimate also has the unique Asus AeroActive Portal on its back - an active air duct with thin thermal fins and a direct pathway into the internal cooling of the phone. It is an intriguing piece of hardware that we already tested in our 6D Ultimate review. Today, we turn our attention to the...

Stable One UI 5 update to drop on Monday for European S22 models

Galaxy users out there might remember Samsung's promise to bring One UI 5 and Android 13 to the S22 line in October. The Korean giant seems to be honoring said promise, with reports already coming in of S22 Ultra units in Italy receiving the coveted OTA. OTA release notes in Italian The package in question has an S908BXXU2BVJA firmware version, weighs in at 2854.03 MB and includes the latest October 2022 security patches. That's just the icing on the proverbial cake, though, since, as you can imagine, the changelog for this particular update is extremely long. You can...

Nothing ear (2) renders leak

Carl Pei's Nothing company seems to be gearing up for at least a couple of impending earphone releases. Last year the brand unveiled the Nothing ear (1) buds, and now a new model is apparently on its way. A few renders have surfaces showcasing the design of the Nothing ear (2) buds. The visual changes compared to the Nothing ear (1) appear to be minimal. The transparent casing is still there, and so is the product's overall aesthetic. The only really obvious change we could spot is an "ear (2)" branding on the stem of the buds in place of the Nothing logo. Unfortunately, there are still no...

Xiaomi leads the Indian smartphone market, Oppo is the only brand still growing

A few days ago, Canalys published its report about global smartphone sales in the third quarter of this year (July to September), and today it's back with a similar evaluation which is this time focused on the Indian smartphone market. Overall, shipments in India declined by 6% in Q3 2022 compared to the year-ago quarter, which Canalys speculates happened because of weak demand for low-end devices. Total shipments were 44.6 million units, down from 47.5 million in Q3 2021. Xiaomi continues to lead the market, with 9.2 million units shipped and a 21% market share, although both of...

Xiaomi 12 Lite 5G NE is on the way as a rebranded Civi 2 for international markets

Towards the end of last year, Xiaomi refreshed the Mi 11 Lite 5G by launching the 11 Lite 5G NE, a practically identical smartphone with a different chipset. In 2022, there's apparently also going to be an NE model for the Lite series, but this one will come with more differences. According to a source from China, the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Lite 5G NE was spotted in an IMEI database, which revealed its existence and its model number, that is 2210129SG. The "G" at the end there signifies that this is a device that will serve the global market, not the Chinese one. And that makes perfect...

Samsung W23 and W23 Flip unveiled: fancier Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 for China Telecom

Every year Samsung releases a fancier version of the Z Fold that is exclusive to China Telecom, e.g. last year’s Samsung W22. For the first time the company is also releasing a W Flip model, based (of course) on the Z Flip. It’s like a modern version of those old W flip phones. The hardware on the Samsung W23 is essentially the same as the Galaxy Z Fold4, except that this is a premium device and the company loaded it up with 16GB of RAM and 512GB storage (the Fold tops out at 12GB RAM). This is all about the exterior, though, and the W phones traditionally come in black and...

Leak: the Samsung Galaxy A54 will have a slightly larger battery

More details have surfaced about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A54, this time concerning its battery (EB-BA546ABY). It will have a rated capacity of 4,905mAh, up from 4,860mAh on the Galaxy A53. Considering that the Galaxy A53 is advertised as having 5,000mAh battery, the typical capacity of the A54 battery will likely be listed as 5,100mAh. Does that come with faster charging? We don’t know yet, but probably not - the current model already supports 25W charging (as much as the premium S22 and quite possibly the S23 as well). The current Samsung Galaxy A53 5G According to a previous...

Windows 11's Subsystem for Android will soon gain support for Android 13

Microsoft introduced the so-called WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android) along with Windows 11 and the aim is to bring the two operating systems closer together through various integrations. Now a Microsoft quietly published an update roadmap for WSA that confirms Android 13 support is on its way. Along with Android 13, Microsoft wants to add a handful of useful new features. Easy file transfer between the WSA container and Windows is one of them. That's going to be a game-changer because file sharing between your phone and PC will be as easy as drag-and-drop. "Picture-in-picture"...

Amazon is already lets users register their interest for the Google Pixel 7a launch

Now that the Pixel 7 series is on sale, there are two Pixel devices remaining in the rumor mill – the foldable, which may or may not be a myth, and the next “a” phone, which is very much a reality. In fact it's arrival isn't too far according to Amazon. The online retail giant is already letting its users subscribe for the upcoming announcement. Now, it doesn’t say when the Pixel 7a will be unveiled or anything about it, but it shouldn’t be long. The Pixel 6a has been out since July of this year, months after the 6 and 6 Pro came out. So, it’s still a fairly fresh model, but Google has a...

Google Pixel 7 Pro unboxing

We're done with the hands-on, now it's time to dive deeper into the Google Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 7. Let's start with an unboxing. The Pixel 7 series adhere to the recent norm of poor retail boxes. There's a USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C dongle. The Pixel 7 Pro is clearly bigger than Pixel 7 but make no mistake, both phones are large in the context of the smartphone market. The Pro is 212g, while the 7 is just 3g shy of 200g. There are subtle differences between Pro and vanilla. The Pro's frame is shiny, polished metal, while the vanilla is matte. We're torn between the two...

Honor Play 40 Plus 5G debuts with 6,000 mAh battery

Today is a big day for Honor, as the company introduced the X6 to the British market, and launched a new product in China - the Play 40 Plus 5G. This new phone comes with a Dimensity 700 chipset, 50MP dual cameras and a huge battery. The Play 40 Plus has a 6.74” LCD with 720p resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. The screen has a small waterdrop notch on top for the 5MP selfie camera. The panel’s technology does not allow fingerprint scanners underneath, meaning the sensor is on the side, over the power key. The main camera is coupled by a 2MP depth sensor, while the selfie camera has a...
