HTC is running a very good promotion for its Nexus 9 tablet today. First things first, though - this only applies if you live in the US. And if you're after a 32GB Wi-Fi-only model, know that you can only get the white one, as black is already out of stock. That said, the price is definitely nice. ZUK Z1 gets a special edition with oak wood back cover

The ZUK Z1 now has a special version that comes with a back cover made from oak wood. This has been announced in China as a limited edition, priced over there at CNY 1,799 ($283 or €259 at the current exchange rates). That's just CNY 100 ($15, €14) more than what the normal iteration of the phone now goes for. So you're not paying a big premium for the exotic material on the back. The oak used for the special edition's back apparently originates in the Appalachian Mountains in the US. Twitter shows that it likes hearts more than stars as it replaces favorites

As of today, Twitter favorites are no more. They've been killed by the social network in favor of likes. With the death of favorites, the star icon used for them is now gone too. Likes are depicted on Twitter with a heart icon. For whatever reason, Twitter's decided to let go of one of its oldest features - favoriting tweets. This was done by clicking or tapping on the star icon. You can say a lot with a heart. Microsoft Surface Book receives 1/10 repairability score on iFixIt

As products get slimmer and slimmer, they need to be engineered for components to take up the least possible amount of space. Manufacturers can come up with some of the most beautifully designed hardware by minimizing the number of seams and replacing screws with gobs of adhesive. The major downside to this is they actually have to use gobs of adhesive, a DIY'ers worst enemy. Don't expect the Surface Book to be any different than its previous Surface family members, all of which consistently received repairability scores of 2/10 and under. In fact the Surface Book did even worse, posting a miserable 1/10 score. While you may be able to remove the display panel to replace a camera module or a fried SSD, there are so many risks involved with heating up the display and prying it away from the surrounding adhesive (i.e. tearing a flex cable, shattering the glass). If you plan on getting the Surface Book (or any Surface, really) spare yourself the headaches and opt for an extended warranty plan. You might thank yourself...

Kantar's data shows Windows Phone ahead of iOS in Russia

According to data revealed by market research firm Kantar Worldpanel, in Russia, Windows Phone was ahead of iOS back in August this year - while the Microsoft's OS had a market share of 12%, Apple's mobile OS claimed 10.8%. Keep in mind that the data covers only the first 8 months of this year, which means there's no information on the smartphone OS market share in Russia for the months following the release of the newest iPhones, something which happened in September this year. It's quite likely that iOS would have overtaken Windows Phone in that time-frame. Aside from Russia, Windows Phone has also seen in its market share rising in several countries around the world. Samsung Galaxy S7 rumored to feature a 12MP camera with 1/2" sensor

In an interesting turn of events Samsung might be taking a step back from the megapixel race and equip the Galaxy S7 with a 12MP primary camera. The flipside is that the sensor will have a rather large by phone standards 1/2" size, if the rumor turns out to be true, that is. Previously rumored to come with a 20MP ISOCELL sensor, next year's flagship has also been mentioned in the same sentence with Sony's custom 23-24.8MP imager used in the Xperia Z5 generation. If this new bit of info checks out, however, the S7 might shift its focus towards low-light performance thanks to what has been dubbed dual-PD (dual-photodiode) technology, and obviously larger individual photosites. The Nexus 5X and 6P both employ Sony's IMX377 sensor, which is 1/2.3" in diagonal and has 1.55 micron pixels, the largest on a contemporary flagship phone. Samsung's new top-tier device will then improve on that number, though the difference between 1/2.3" and 1/2.0" isn't as great as to be called a jump. We're talking single-digit percentages here and a sensor diagonal of 7.75mm vs. 8.00mm. The test itself was failed and held no indication of performance, but the specs sheet of the Huawei NXT-AL10 was revealed and by all accounts, it looks to be the eagerly-anticipated Huawei Mate 8, powered by the company's new SoC - the Kirin 950. Today, a new GeekBench leak, bearing the same NXT-AL10 model number offers a new twist to the story. This time around, there is a performance score and it is quite flattering for the Kirin 950, which managed a whopping 1710 points on single-core performance and 6245 on multi-core. Now, these numbers might not be a hundred percent accurate, especially since it's a pre-production unit and there is even a mismatch in the frequency between the two benchmarks (GeekBench says 1.8 GHs, while GFXBench lists 1.2 GHz), so it is early to say whether this does the Kirin 950 justice. Still, if we have to make some preliminary comparison, it looks like the new Kirin 950, obliterates Samsung's current crown jewel - the Exynos 7420, which can do about 1486 points on single core tests and 4970 on multi-core. That is an impressive achievement, especially considering HiSilicon's track record of putting out underpowered chips. Still, it is not exactly fair to pit an upcoming chip against one that is already being used today and other chip vendors also deserve some attention. New Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 firmware update is aimed at fixing screen flickering issues

Microsoft has started rolling out a new firmware update to the recently-released Surface Book laptop and Surface Pro 4 tablet. The "System Firmware Update - 11/2/2015" brings several improvements and fixes, including the one for screen flickering issue. As per the change log, the HD Graphics 520 driver (v20.19.15.4308) has been updated to fix the flickering issues, and the display audio driver (v8.20.0.659) has been updated to make it compatible with the updated graphics driver. In addition, the Surface Embedded Controller Firmware for both devices has been updated to improve system stability, while the Surface Pen Settings driver now includes support for future functionality on Windows 10. Vertu sold to Hong Kong fund and private investors

Vertu changes hands yet again. The luxury phone maker is going to Hong Kong-based called Godin Holdings and private investors, three years after being sold by Nokia to investment fund EQT VI. The deal has received the required approvals. It seems that Vertu will keep its manufacturing plant in Hampshire in the UK, but it is parting way with CEO Massimiliano Pogliani. Pogliani was appointed head of Vertu after the Nokia sale. It's not clear how much the extravagant manufacturer was sold for, both parties decided to keep that private. Back in 2012, Nokia allegedly got $200 million for a 90% share in the company, keeping 10%. "We believe VERTU is operationally stronger today with a leading position in the luxury mobile phone market. Xiaomi enters African smartphone market this month

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi will begin selling its handsets in Africa this month, with South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya becoming the first African countries where the company's devices will be available for purchase. The smartphones that'll go on sale include the Redmi 2 and Mi 4. As for the price, while the former will carry a tag of around $160, the latter will set you back around $320. Xiaomi has appointed the Mobile In Africa (MIA) Group - which has presence in 14 African countries - as a full-service distributor for these markets, providing importation, logistics, marketing, and support services. LeTV receives over 11 million Le 1s pre-orders in a week

Last week, Chinese company LeTV updated its Le series with the new Le 1s smartphone, which is a CNY 1,100 ($173) handset featuring a MediaTek Helio X10 chipset and sporting a 5.5" IPS LCD display of 1080p resolution. Now, exactly a week later, the company has revealed that it has received more than a whopping 11 million pre-orders for the device, amounting to around $1.91 billion. Huawei offering $50 off on its smartwatch if you purchase it along with Nexus 6P

Huawei has launched a promotion where those purchasing the Huawei Watch along with the company's Nexus 6P smartphone will get $50 off on the smartwatch. The offer, however, is available only in the US. The promotion is only valid for purchases made directly from Huawei through its GetHuawei.com online store in the United States. Another thing worth mentioning is that the deal doesn't include the gold color variant of the smartwatch. Those interested in the deal will just have to log in to their Huawei Store account and add a Nexus 6P and Huawei Watch to their cart. Microsoft removes unlimited storage on OneDrive, reduces capacities across the board

If you are a heavy user of Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage service, you are not going to love this. Microsoft has announced that it is getting rid of the unlimited storage option for Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscribers. The storage is now limited to 1TB. Additionally, 100GB and 200GB plans will no longer be available to new users, and will be replaced with a 50GB plan for $1.99 per month from 2016. Lastly, free OneDrive storage has been dropped from 15GB to just 5GB for all users. The 15GB camera storage bonus has also been dropped. This will be effective starting 2016. For existing Office 365 customers, if you have over 1TB of data stored, you have 12 months to find that data a new home before it is deleted. Same for free users with over 5GB of data. Users of 100GB and 200GB plans will not be affected. So why did Microsoft decide to do this all of a sudden? The company's reason is that some people were misusing the unlimited storage options by backing up entire movie collections and DVR recordings, amounting to as much as 75TB for some users. So basically, because a small number of users were "abusing" the system ("abusing" in quotes because technically Microsoft did promise 'unlimited' storage, so the people were well within their rights to upload as much content as they want), Microsoft is now gutting the storage options for all customers. Meizu Pro 5 Mini said to be powered by Mediatek's 10-core SoC

Less than a couple of months after the Meizu Pro 5 was made official with 5.7-inch screen and Samsung Exynos 7420 chipset, there are reports that the company is following it up with a new handset named Pro 5 Mini. The new handset's highlight is said to be its chipset - it is said to be powered by the Mediatek Helio X20 10-core SoC, which was announced back in May this year. Other known specs of the device include 4.7-inch Full HD display, 32GB/64GB internal memory options, and a metal build. Nexus 5X now up for pre-order in Europe, ships November 9

A couple of weeks after it went on sale in select markets around the world, the LG-made Nexus 5X smartphone is now available for pre-order across Europe. All you have to do is to head to Google Play and place your order. As for the price, like we already told you, the device is expensive in Europe - the 16GB model costs €479 ($527), while the 32GB one will set you back €529 ($582). This compares to the US, where it carries a price tag of around $380. Plus, there's no $50 Play Store credit or 90-day Play Music subscription that buyers in the US get. "Chrome OS is here to stay", Google says

Last week a controversial report from the Wall Street Journal claimed that Google is working on 'folding' Chrome OS into Android. The new, combined operating system would apparently launch in 2017, although it's said to already have been in the works for a couple of years. Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google's Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome OS, and Chromecast, soon after put out a tweet disputing the information, and today he's written an entire official blog post about the situation. "Chrome OS is here to stay", he says, trying to once and for all put an end to all the speculation. This isn't the first time we've heard about Google wanting (or "needing") to combine its two operating systems, although oddly not many in the media seem as convinced that Apple should do the same with Mac OS and iOS. Lockheimer clearly states that "there's no plan to phase out Chrome OS". And he also uses the occasion to give us some stats regarding Chrome OS. Every school day, 30,000 new Chromebooks are activated in US classrooms, which is more than all of their competitors combined. 2 million teachers and students in more than 150 countries have the Share to Classroom Chrome extension, which gets students all onto the same webpage instantly. This seems to imply that Chrome the browser or Chrome OS is a staple in classrooms across the world, not just the US. The Google SVP also name-drops the upcoming Asus Chromebit (pictured above), which is apparently going to be available in the next couple of weeks for $85. The Chromebit is a Chrome OS running HDMI dongle that can turn any TV into a computer. Asus unveils a new Zenfone 2 Laser for the US, out today for $199

Asus loves confusing people with the names of its products, so today it's launching the Zenfone 2 Laser in the US. Only, this being Asus, of course there's a catch when it comes to the name. See, this isn't the internationally available Zenfone 2 Laser. Actually, it's none of them - since there are amazingly no less than four different Zenfone 2 Laser models out there already: the ZE500KL, ZE500KG, ZE550KL, and the ZE601KL. In the US, however, you're getting the never before seen Zenfone 2 Laser ZE551KL. This device comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera with laser autofocus (hence the name) and dual-tone LED flash, a 5 MP selfie cam, 3GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of expandable storage, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 SoC running the show (with a 1.7 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU), 4G LTE, dual-SIM functionality, and a 3,000 mAh battery. Samsung Gear S2, LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE land at AT&T this month

The BlackBerry Priv isn't the only device for which AT&T has announced availability details today. The carrier is going to launch two smartwatches this month, and both of them have mobile data connectivity. We're talking about the Samsung Gear S2 and the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE. Both of these will be up for pre-order in stores and online starting on November 6, which is this Friday. These two watches will be the first ones to have installment plans available for them at AT&T. Of the two, the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE will become available first, on November 13. It will cost $199.99 with a new two-year contract, or $15 per month for 20 months using the Next installment plan, adding up to a full retail price of $300. AT&T has just announced that it's going to be the first US carrier to sell the BlackBerry Priv. This, as you may know, is BlackBerry's first smartphone to run Android, and it has a sliding form factor, complete with the trademark BlackBerry physical keyboard. BlackBerry has essentially been unveiling the Priv bit by bit, little by little, for the past few months. So it's good to see it finally reaching stores. AT&T will have the Priv in stock at retail outlets nationwide, as well as online, starting on November 6, which is this Friday. The handset will cost $249.99 with a new two-year contract. You'll also be able to get it using AT&T's Next installment plans, shelling out nothing upfront, then followed by either 30 monthly payments of $24.67, 24 monthly installments of $30.84, or you could pay $37 for 20 months.
