There's quite a lot to the LG V10 - a flagship, a phablet, a camera phone, a rugged phone, a Hi-Fi phone and the first of the new V-series. It's a feature-packed device and its signature feature is the secondary always-on display and a dual selfie camera.
The Huawei Mate 8 has proven quite an elusive device to say the least. Despite frequent visits to the rumor mill in the last few months, we are still not entirely sure what to make of the eagerly-anticipated Ascend Mate 7 successor. All the information we have so far seems to be oddly mixed with rumors of the Huawei Mate S, but with the latter now official, we are more inclined to believe a recently uncovered GFXBench listing, that is said to come from the Mate 8. According to it, the beastly handset, referred to as "Huawei NXT-AL10", will spout a large 6.0-inch display, just like previous rumors have suggested. However, another recent source hints at QHD resolution, whereas this result suggest a FullHD panel. It might be a detection issues or perhaps even a forced resolution, as the rest of the data does seem to mostly match up. The phone is said to be powered by the OEM's new custom Kirin 950 chipset. It promises to deliver unprecedented power thanks to a 16nm FinFET production process and a big.LITTLE architecture, with four Cortex-A72 cores running at 2.2 GHz or perhaps even 2.4 GHz and another four Cortex-A53 ones, clocked at 2.0 GHz. The bundled GPU is the impressive ARM Mali-T880, which should also be joined by an i7 coprocessor and a Tensilica Hi-Fi 4 independent audio chip. The GFXBench sheet also lists 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage (well 3.7GB and 53GB, to be exact) and previous info also hints at a less powerful 3GB version, with 32GB of bundled space. As for the camera, what was previously said to be a 13MP main shooter is now being reported as 15MP, with a maximum resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels. Some quick math reviews that this is actually a lot closer to 16MP. The second camera is said to be 7MP with a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels. Other specs on the Mate 8 should include dual SIM support, a microSD card slot, NFC and perhaps also a fingerprint reader and Force Touch display, like the Mate S, but the latter two are largely unconfirmed. In any case, we will know for sure come November 26, when Huawei should finally unveil the phone. Nearly five months after it was announced, the Android 5.1 Lollipop-based Cyanogen OS 12.1 update has started rolling out to the Yu Yureka and Yurerka Plus smartphones. Aiming to improve its customer support and services, Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has announced a new smartphone warranty program. Launched in collaboration with Simplesurance and B2X in Europe and India, respectively, the service on the Old Continent is called On-Guard, while the latter's offerings include OnePlus Service2 and Protect2. The On-Guard plan will cover breakage, accidental or liquid damage, damage caused due to dropping and even vandalism. It costs €39.99 for 12 months and €64.99 for 24 moths. Those interested can purchase the plan on oneplus.net upon checkout for their OnePlus smartphone. It is going to hit the shelves later this month, but now Gionee is introducing a bigger flavor to keep it company on those shelves. Windows 10 has been around for three months now and Microsoft hasn't skipped on any opportunities to boast its growing popularity. About a month ago, Executive VP Terry Myerson pointed out that the OS has already reached 110 million devices and by Microsoft statistics that number has now exceeded the 120 million mark. This is hardly a surprise, considering the fact that, for the time being, Windows 10 is offered as a totally free upgrade to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users and is also being pushed rather aggressively with notifications and in some reported cases, even automatic installs. Current figures from Netmarketshare reveal that Windows 10 now has about 7.94% market share on the desktop scene. This is a veritable achievement, considering the aforementioned short timeframe, but is still far from the whopping 55.71% of Windows 7 and even the 10.68% of Windows 8.1, not to mention the 11.68% strong Windows XP users (granted, quite a few of those are not exactly running on end-user machines). Adoption of the new OS is still climbing, but the rate has slowed down significantly since the initial update frenzy. It is also worth noting that Windows 8.1 numbers are steady, so satisfaction with the older platform seems good and new Windows 10 users must be coming from somewhere else. All things considered, despite the flying start, Windows 10 still has a long way to go to assert any dominance in the Microsoft realm. Here we go again. After releasing the game on Steam, pulling it down and offering refunds because it had technical issues, then putting it up again on Steam after four months, WB is now again offering refunds to those who are still facing issues. Turns out, the game still isn't working well, and many people are reporting that although it is better than before, the game still runs poorly even on expensive hardware and really poorly on more humble machines even at lowest settings. For what it's worth, this is totally random, and several people, myself included, have zero issues with the game. However, if you are not so lucky, you can now get a refund from Steam. WB is offering an extended refund on the main game and the season pass till the end of 2015. You can return the game regardless of the number of hours you have spend playing (the regular Steam refund system only allows you to refund within 14 days and only if you've played the game for less than two hours). Unfortunately, this is only applicable to those who purchased the game on Steam. For those who purchased from other online sellers or offline retailers, you just have to deal with the game and hope they fix it further in future. After Microsoft dropped the prices of its Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones in the UK, the devices have also received a price cut in France, where Amazon is now selling the black Lumia 950 for around €563 and both black and white Lumia 950 XL variants for €649 each. Earlier, the e-commerce giant was selling the handsets for €599 and €699, respectively, in the country. Keep in mind that Amazon France ships all over Europe, and these new prices are a better deal than what Microsoft is offering in the UK - £450 (€629) for the Lumia 950 and £530 (€741) for the 950 XL. The Samsung Galaxy J3 smartphone - which was spotted listed on Geekbench earlier last month - has passed the FCC hurdle, meaning it could be made official soon. This week saw some high profile launches, some promises of future technological marvels and was punctuated by some drama surrounding Apple. The company is having flashbacks of the iPhone 4 launch. The Apple iPhone 6s reception was tested against a variety of Androids and other phones and the 6s not only scored less than the iPhone 6 (its predecessor) it also scored less than the iPhone 4. Strangely, the 4S is behind the iPhone 4 too. The affordable, premium OnePlus X got a ton of attention too. With a 5" AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution and Snapdragon 801 it entices Galaxy S4 users, with an anodized aluminum body or the premium option, ceramics. These will cost $250/£200 and £270 respectively (no ceramic for the US). Samsung's 'Project Valley,' a foldable smartphone, will be unveiled in January next year. The unique contraption will launch in several EU countries and, of course, South Korea. That makes up for still not having an EU Galaxy Note5, right? Samsung's R&D department got even more love when word came out of Korea that the Exynos 8890 chipset (slated for the Galaxy S7) will hit the production lines in December. Codenamed 'Mongoose,' this chipset will debut Samsung's custom CPU cores, a break away from the ARM designs. The company staid in the headlines with the Samsung Galaxy View, its 18.4" tablet. It features TV integration and wants to be a portable smartscreen at home and serve the whole family with a mini social network. The rollout of the stable version of MIUI 7 got a lot of people excited too. It's landing on a number of Mi and Redmi devices over the air and promises faster UI, longer battery life and better customization. The Oppo Neo 7 is a fairly affordable entry into the 5" market. Buried under the piles of footage we took with this year's iPhones, a comparison between the video output of the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus somehow managed to go unpublished. Well, that changes here and now. OK, actually we added it to both reviews yesterday, we're just making sure you're in the loop. So, as you can imagine, everything else being equal, the VS focuses on optical image stabilization. The iPhone 6s doesn't have it, and the Plus does. Where the iPhone 6 Plus only used it for stills, starting from this generation it's also employed when shooting video. And it makes all the difference in the world. Building on top of the already capable electronic image stabilization of the iPhone 6s, putting the hardware to good use yields even better results. This was a busy week and a great one for lovers of XL-sized Androids, though we got a couple of 5-inchers too. Motorola unveiled two Verizon devices - the Droid Turbo 2 and the Droid Maxx 2. The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 is a month away from launch and is Moto's new top dog. It has a 5.4" QHD P-OLED display and is powered by Snapdragon 810, so it tops the Moto X Style. It does borrow its 21MP camera and stereo speakers. The Motorola Droid Maxx 2 is Verizon's version of the Moto X Play. This means a 5.5" 1080p screen, water repellant coating (IP52) and a 21MP camera. Unlike the Turbo 2, the Droid Maxx 2 records 1080p video instead of 4K. Both have huge batteries though, 3,730mAh and 3,630mAh respectively. The duo launched on October 29. The Droid Maxx 2 goes for $624 (full retail price) and the Droid Turbo 2 is $384. You can pay those in monthly installments too. Samsung unveiled its honking big 18.4" tablet, the Samsung Galaxy View. It's more of a portable smart screen with TV integration with 4W stereo speakers. The 1080p screen resolution and octa-core Cortex-A53 aren't greatly impressive though. It's coming November 6 for $600. MetroPCS (and soon T-Mobile) got an affordable 5.5-incher from Alcatel. The Alcatel Fierce XL has a 720p screen and an 8MP camera with Polaroid software. It's powered by Snapdragon 210 and will cost $140 when it launches on November 2. OnePlus X, the company's first 5" phone, was unveiled this week with a 5" 1080p screen, Snapdragon 801 chipset and an optional ceramic body. The base version has an anodized metal frame, but the premium ceramic version (only 10,000 will be made) takes 28 hours in a 1,480°C to manufacture. The base version is $250/£200 and the ceramic one is £270 (not available in the US). Oppo has a more modest 5-incher, the Neo 7, with a qHD screen (540 x 960px), Snapdragon 410 and an 8MP f/2.0 camera. It's $200 and launched in Asia, the Middle East and Africa (headed to Mexico later on). Finally, a 7" dual-SIM tablet from BLU. That's right, the BLU Studio 7.0 LTE has two SIM slots and 4G LTE. It launched on Amazon in the US and will set you back $200. The clash of titans has ended and the Sony Xperia Z5 has emerged victorious. Cementing its position as the most loved high-end smartphone, the Z5 gathered more votes than the other two combined and never really had much opposition. Finishing last, the iPhone 6s managed to collect a lowly 16% of the nearly 13,000 votes. The Android vs. iOS battle turned out not to be in its favor - instead of an even spread between the OS's, which would leave the iPhone in front, Apple's creation couldn't even attract a third of the readers. The Samsung Galaxy S6, on the other hand, enticed a bit more than a quarter of the voters for a 28% overall result. Despite being the oldest of the three by some six months, it's still a solid performer and a regular in the Top 10 trending chart week after week. The Sony Xperia Z5 scored twice what the S6 did - 56% of the upvotes went its way. Now, Sony's loyal supporters been known to mobilize when the situation calls for it, but with such high numbers we're inclined to believe there's more to the Z5's win than your everyday fan love. ...
In yet another edition of our weekly Top 10 trending chart, we witness the Samsung Galaxy J-series dominate. A total of three members of the Korean manufacturer's affordable line are present, one of them in the top spot. The Galaxy J2 returns after briefly falling off the wagon last week, and we now find it in seventh. The other two Js seem to be bolted to the podium - the J5 returns to its runner-up position, which the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 (now nowhere to be found) briefly claimed for a week, while the J7 holds the top spot for a fourth week in a row in terms of specs page hits. The Galaxy Grand Prime joins its cousins on the podium in third, keeping the Galaxy Note5 away from the medals. The iPhone 6s is in fifth spot, customarily occupying the middle of the chart. It's the Meizu metal, which is the only true new entry this week. The Helio X10-powered metal-clad 5.5-inch phablet joins the race in sixth position, a few hundred hits per day ahead of the J2. The Samsung Galaxy S6 flagship, which held the crown for months earlier this year, is now in eighth position, keeping company to the Sony Xperia Z5, itself in ninth.
