Deals: budget picks from Honor, Poco, Motorola and OnePlus

While flagships tend to get the most attention in our weekly deals, there are plenty of options in the budget market too. These are our top picks from Amazon UK. The phone also boots Honor’s MagicUI 8.0 based on Android 14. Honor X6b 4/128GB £89.99 at Amazon UK Motorola's Moto G34 is slightly over the £100 mark. It...

Weekly poll results: the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE needs a price cut

The results are in from last week’s poll and they are not encouraging – most voters believe that the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is overpriced. How come? Well, part of the problem is that the phone comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage as standard. While you can’t have more RAM, you could get 256GB storage. But since 128GB is pretty tight these days, people are looking at the 256GB price tag, not the 128GB one. That makes the FE feel expensive, especially when compared to mid-rangers from other brands, which start at 8/256GB or even 12/256GB. It’s not just other brands too, with a bit...

Honor Magic V3 and V2 approximate Indian launch date and pricing revealed

The Honor Magic V3 foldable has been out and about for some time now, in China at least, but during this year's IFA in Berlin, the company promised to bring the device to the global market as well. And India is getting the V3 very soon. In an interview with Times Network, the HTech CEO Madhav Sheth revealed that the Honor Magic V3 would debut by the end of this year in India, and its predecessor, the Magic V2, will tag along. He also said that the Magic V2 will go for less than INR 100,000, while the V3 will cost more than that. Currently, the Tecno Phantom V Fold is the cheapest...

Google is making it easier to protect your data if your phone gets stolen

Google is reportedly pushing a feature update to some Android phones, adding anti-theft functionalities such as Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock. The latter isn't exactly new, and many Android users already have it. However, the Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock are brand new functionalities announced back in May and increase data security. Anti-theft features The Theft Detection Lock is the fanciest of them all. It leverages AI and the device's sensors to detect common motions associated with theft. For instance, if someone pulls the phone out...

Realme GT Neo7 specs leak revealing interesting chipset choice

Realme launched the GT Neo6 back in May and it's already working on its successor. The GT Neo7's launch timeline has allegedly been accelerated, according to a tipster over on Weibo. The GT Neo7 is rumored to come with a "1.5K" flat "gaming" screen, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Version (which has been ruling AnTuTu for a while now), a large battery, and support for 100W fast wired charging. Realme GT Neo6 It's unclear what is meant by a "gaming screen" - maybe a 144 Hz refresh rate? But this device could very well be aimed at gamers, especially with its use of that higher binned...

Redmi Note 14 Pro+ breaks a sales record

The Redmi Note 14 Pro+ got official on September 26, and promptly entered AnTuTu's monthly chart for upper-midrange devices in the tenth spot. The phone went on sale immediately, and today the Xiaomi sub-brand is boasting a very impressive feat it's achieved. Apparently the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ broke a record for first-week sales. Machine translation from Chinese isn't very helpful at explaining exactly what record we're talking about. It seems to be implying that it's a record sales number for any Android phone, not just Redmis, but then there's a caveat regarding price. So we assume...

MediaTek Dimensity 9400 CPU details leak

MediaTek is officially unveiling its next flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400, on October 9. Ahead of that, the chip has already overtaken Apple's A18 chip in a GPU benchmark, and topped the AnTuTu scales. Today courtesy of prolific Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station we get purported details about its CPU cores. According to DCS, the Dimensity 9400 will have one Cortex-X925 super-large core clocked at up to 3.626 GHz, three Cortex-X4 large cores, and four Cortex-A720 cores, though the latter could be a typo since Cortex-A725 are the latest designs from Arm. Anyway, DCS says the...

Google is bringing verified checkmarks to its search engine

Verified checkmarks used to be a status symbol before Elon Musk ruined everything by allowing the plebs to purchase said status. Google, however, might be bringing back the status symbol nature of verified checkmarks, as it seems intent on introducing them to its search results. This is only a test at the moment, which only a limited subset of Google users are seeing. But what they are seeing will definitely seem familiar to anyone who's been on a social media site in the past few years. The checkmarks are blue and show up next to business links, which makes this a case of good...

Samsung One UI 7 based on Android 15 is only arriving next year

Google released Android 15 into the Android Open Source Project recently and is expected to start rolling out updates to its Pixel smartphones on October 15. With that in mind, you may have been wondering when Samsung's One UI 7 based on Android 15 would come out, especially considering the fact that the Korean company was among the fastest with issuing previous major updates in recent years. We now know, and it's not good news if you're impatient. According to the keynote at Samsung's ongoing developer conference, One UI 7 will only be released when the Galaxy S25 series is launching...

YouTube Shorts are getting longer

YouTube Shorts are getting longer. Starting on October 15, you can create Shorts that are up to 3 minutes long. This was apparently a top requested feature, and now it's almost here. The change obviously won't affect any videos uploaded before October 15, and applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio. YouTube says it will also work hard to improve recommendations for longer Shorts "in the coming months". Shorts are also getting templates, which you can try by tapping Remix on a Short and then selecting Use this template. And, "in the coming months", you'll be able...

Samsung phones will unlock your door with a tap, or even hands-free

Samsung smartphones will, from next year, be able to unlock smart locks with just a tap - or not even that, by going hands-free using UWB. The tap to unlock functionality will use NFC instead, as you may have expected. Samsung users will thus become on par with iPhone owners, who have had the ability to unlock smart locks in a fiddle-free way already. Samsung will support the new Aliro smart lock standard and add it to its Wallet's Digital Home Key. When that happens, tap to unlock and hands-free unlocking will become a reality, and both of these can work locally between your phone...

Google Pixel 9a to get an early launch

The Pixel 9 family was launched back in August, around two months earlier than Google's previous events took place in past years. But the family still isn't complete - the Pixel 9a is left to join it. And it will do so sooner than you may have expected, according to a new rumor. The Pixel 9a will be available for pre-order in mid-March, multiple sources have allegedly said. This is about - you guessed it - two months early compared to previous a series releases which took place around Google I/O in May. Google Pixel 9a leaked CAD-based render The Pixel 9a is then said to ship and...

Oura Ring 4 announced: sleeker design, updated sensors and redesigned app

The Oura Ring 4 is now official and it brings a slew of improvements compared to the outgoing Gen 3 version from three years ago. Oura Ring 4 features a fully titanium exterior and interior ditching the epoxy interior of its predecessor. The new device is 2.88mm thick and weighs between 3.3 and 5.2 grams depending on the ring size. It is also water resistant up to 100m. The sensors inside are a lot slimmer measuring just 0.3mm compared to 1.3mm on the Ring Gen 3 and they don’t stick out. And while the sensors have shrunk, Oura is promising improved accuracy. Oura claims a...

Teardowns of new AirPods show no major repairability gains

Apple announced its AirPods 4 and AirPods Max with USB-C last month and the team over at iFixt has now shared their teardowns. Long story short, neither of the new AirPods offers improvements in terms of repairability. The small AirPods 4 require a specialized jig holder that keeps them in place while a heat gun helps loosen the adhesive to open up the top half of the buds. AirPods 4 teardown (iFixit) We can then see the speaker and battery components surrounded by heaps of glue. Opening up the bottom of the stem is a lot more challenging and requires a knife to cut...

You can now share images to Gemini, while Gemini Nano opens up to app developers

Google keeps updating Gemini with new features, and today we have a couple of Gemini-related news. First, a feature addition that will save you some time whenever you need Gemini to tell you something about an image. That's because with the newest version of the Gemini app for Android, you can now share an image directly to Gemini, by using the Android share sheet. You can then immediately ask it questions about the image you just sent it. So if you don't want to tap the Ask about this screen option to have a screenshot taken and sent to Gemini, or manually attach an image in the...

OnePlus is banned from selling smartphones in Germany yet again

OnePlus (and its parent Oppo) were embroiled in a very protracted patent dispute with Nokia in the past, which at one point saw OnePlus and Oppo devices banned from sale in Germany (and this only ended a few months ago), and now unfortunately history repeats itself. Though this time the problem isn't with Nokia, it's also a patent dispute, with InterDigital, over key patents for 5G and other mobile technologies. And that sounds pretty similar to what the Nokia kerfuffle was all about. The OnePlus 12 is among the victims OnePlus' online store in Germany once again has no smartphones...

More Google Pixel 9a details leak

Google's upcoming Pixel 9a leaked in CAD-based renders yesterday, and today we have a new leak that gives us some more details about it. It will allegedly be offered in four colors, which Google will call Porcelain, Obsidian, Peony, and Iris. To translate into English, we are talking about white, black, pink-ish, and purple-blue-ish, respectively. This means no more Aloe and Bay, colors that were offered on the Pixel 8a. The Pixel 9a will be 154 mm tall and 73 mm wide, making it about 1.9 mm taller and 0.3 mm wider than its predecessor. On the other hand, the new phone will be...

Realme GT7 Pro certification unearths its charging capacity

The Realme GT7 Pro is coming, and ahead of its official announcement it has just been certified for sale in China by 3C. This process has revealed the fact that it will ship with a 120W fast charger in the box, which implies the phone itself will support 120W wired charging. However, past reports have claimed it would only go up to 100W, despite shipping with a more powerful charger. According to a recent rumor, the GT7 Pro will be announced in early November and released for purchase on Singles Day (November 11), China's biggest shopping day. The Realme GT7 Pro is alleged to...

Android 16 could launch sooner than you'd expect

Google releases a new version of Android each year, and since 2013 the releases have all come between August and November. That, however, might be set to change with Android 16. While Android 15 is only expected to start rolling out to supported Pixels on October 15, Google seems to already be thinking about releasing Android 16 much sooner than usual - at some point in the second quarter of next year in fact, so between April and June. That would be a pretty significant shift in strategy, but then again Google has this year similarly switched its hardware announcement from the...
